What’s the difference between a blanket and a quilt?

A true quilt has three layers:
a pieced top, batting, and backing that are stitched together through all layers and finished with binding. This construction is what allows quilts to last for decades.

Some companies advertise “t-shirt quilts” that are actually just shirts sewn to backing fabric like a blanket. My quilts are traditionally constructed for durability and longevity.

How can I ensure I get my quilt by a certain date?

Plan ahead and place your order early. Turnaround times vary depending on current orders, so please contact me for the most accurate timeline.

Can I plan my own layout?

For sashing quilts, you’re welcome to plan your own layout if you’d like. Just keep in mind that all blocks must be the same size, or able to be cut to the same size without disrupting the design.

For collage quilts, you can absolutely make specific requests—such as placing a certain shirt in the center or keeping certain shirts next to each other. Because collage quilts use varying block sizes and a patchwork-style layout, it’s usually more difficult for someone without quilting experience to plan the entire design.

Most customers simply share any preferences they have, and I take care of arranging the layout so the shirts and graphics work together as well as possible.

Should I cut my shirts to save money on shipping?

I would not suggest cutting your shirts to save money on shipping. If they are cut too small I will have to build a block which can incur an $8.50/block surcharge.

What is the current turnaround time?

Processing time starts when I receive your shirts. Turnaround time varies. Please contact me directly at kayla@tshirtquiltsbykayla.com for the current turnaround time.

Will my tshirt remnants be returned to me?

Any unused tshirt scraps will be discarded unless otherwise requested.
If there are completely unused shirts I will return those with your finished quilt.

Do you accept returns?

No, due to the nature of a custom order quilt there are no returns on made to order items.
I want you to love your quilt as much as you loved your tees. If you have a problem with your quilt please reach out to me at kayla@tshirtquiltsbykayla.com to resolve.

Do you donate to local school auctions or fundraisers?

Yes. Any interested organization can contact me through the Contact page. Donations are done in the following ways:
1. Custom tshirt quilt for auctions.
2. Raffle Quilts made with your organization’s tshirts. Your school or team provides the tshirts and a supply fee (based on style of quilt) and I donate my time to create a quilt to be raffled off.
